Co-Op Spotlight by Sneha Maheshwari

Reflecting on the first few months of my Fall Co-op experience as a Research and Development Intern at Becton-Dickinson, I’m blessed to be in a role where I am able to explore my professional career opportunities and further achieve my goals. Coming into college as an out-of-state Biomedical Engineering major, I felt anxious of what awaited me and where my education would take me. Now going into my junior year, I can confirm I’m in the right place with the tools needed to set me up for success.

My role at Becton-Dickinson includes working closely with a team of mentors to aid in developing prototypes to address different medical issues, while getting hands-on engineering lab experience, and working in cross-functional teams to learn how the industry works. It’s been a rewarding experience so far and I’m so excited to see how I can take these skills and apply them when I get back to classes.

I’ve had the support of my Alpha Xi sisters through every step in the process, from applying and interviewing for the position, to my first day. As the career development chair of Alpha Xi, I was able to take the resources that the academic team provides for the chapter and further utilize them to reach my goals. Alpha Xi has provided me with academic mentors, older sisters, and fellow classmates that have helped me realize my potential and work towards my interests. Without having such a supportive community, I wouldn’t have the resources and confidence to take the steps needed to be where I am today.

I’m so happy that I had the opportunity to embark on this journey, and am excited for what the future holds. Working at Becton-Dickinson has prompted me to find my engineering niche, and pursue an accelerated BS/MS program in Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech following my bachelor’s degree graduation. I may not know where I’ll end up but I do know that I am surrounded by a great group of people who will support me with each step in my academic and professional journey, and I am so thankful to be an Alpha Xi.

Xoxi,
